Introduction

The Importance of Purity in Islam
Allah Almighty states in the Quran (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6):

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ
Translation:
“O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salah (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (with wet hands) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles.”

Authentic English Translation: “Salah is not accepted without purification.”

Conditions (Shuroot) of Wudu
Before beginning Wudu, certain conditions must be met:
- The person performing Wudu must be a Muslim.
- Must be sane and of age (Buligh).
- Intention (Niyyah) originating purely from the heart.
- Istinja (cleaning oneself from impurities) if necessary.
Step-by-Step Method of Performing Wudu
- Intention (Niyyah): Make the intention in your heart and begin by reciting Bismillah (In the name of Allah).
- Washing Hands: Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, ensuring water reaches between the fingers (Khilaal).
- Rinsing the Mouth: Take water into your mouth and rinse it thoroughly three times.
- Cleaning the Nose: Sniff water into your nostrils three times to clean them thoroughly, using your left hand to clean afterward.
- Washing the Face: Wash your entire face three times, from the top of the forehead down to the chin, and from one earlobe to the other.
- Washing the Arms: Wash your right arm thoroughly up to the elbow three times, then repeat the exact same process for your left arm.
- Wiping the Head (Masah): Using wet hands, pass them over your head once—starting from the front, moving towards the back, and then bringing them back to the front.
- Cleaning the Ears: Use your index fingers to clean the inside of your ears and your thumbs for the outer parts.
- Washing the Feet: Wash both feet up to the ankles three times—starting with the right foot, making sure water passes between the toes, and then repeating the process with the left foot.
Supplication After Completing Wudu
Upon completing Wudu, it is recommended to recite this supplication:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَـهَ إِلاّ اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لا شَريـكَ لَـهُ وَأَشْهَدُأَنَّ مُحَمّـداً عَبْـدُهُ وَرَسـولُـه
Translation:
I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The Obligatory Acts (Faraa’id) of Wudu
For Wudu to be valid, the following six acts are compulsory:
- Washing the face.
